Viburnum opulus (European Cranberrybush, European Highbush Cranberry)
As an ornamental, it was brought to North America. Simple leaves, three lobed and coarsely serrated, orbicular, 2-4 in long, with concave glands on the petiole; dark green top, velvety underneath. Tan to gray-brown stems with pronounced ridges and many lenticels; plump green to reddish brown buds with two visible scales. Flowers are white, highly beautiful, 1/2 inch across, and appear in huge clusters, with the outer ring of flowers sterile and larger; many growers have only sterile flowers; bloom in mid-spring.
