Toona sinensis (Chinese Toon, Chinese Mahogany, Red Toon)
The Meliaceae family's Toona sinensis is a lovely deciduous tree.
Quickly becoming a popular tree to raise for "Toona Sprouts". This tasty somewhat spicy vegetable is very nutritious and easy to grow. Just sow the seed and harvest young seedlings or let some plants grow to 3-4 feet tall keeping the branches pruned back. The young shoots that grow from the cut stems can be harvested during the early growing season. Allow the tree to leaf out completely from July onward to replenish energy for next years harvest.
The peeling bark, leaves, and blooms of this plant are all appealing aspects of this species. The stems are downy at first, and the leaves are 30-60cm long, pinnate, and have 10-24 leaflets that emerge bronzy-pink before becoming deep green and gold in the fall. Green-white blooms dangle from drooping clusters.
