Taxodium distichum Southern (Bald Cypress)
The baldcypress is a common sight in southern marshes. It has an unusual tendency of sprouting conical "knees" from its roots in its natural environment. This is a deciduous coniferous tree. Short needles are paired and placed along thin branchlets. In the spring, they are yellow-green, then soft green, then reddish- or orangish-brown in the summer, and finally reddish- or orangish-brown in the autumn. This is a shade tree with a wide canopy that may shield direct sunlight.
