Taxodium distichum imbricatum (Pond Cypress)
The pond cypress is an elegant pyramid-shaped tree with black, hairy bark and light-green leaves that turn orange-red in the fall. The leaves are shorter and thin, and they grow on upright rather than spreading stems. Even on young trees, the trunk expands at the base to help the tree anchor in the soft, muddy soil. The cones are likewise smaller, with a diameter of less than 2.5 cm. The bark has a lighter grey hue as well.
