It's a lovely deciduous shrub that grows to be 1-4 metres tall. The juvenile twigs have reddish-brown scales, whilst the elder twigs have brown scales. With short petioles, the leaves are oblong to ovate-lanceolate in form. The top blades are a bright green colour. Small, reddish-brown, bran-like scales cover the bottom leaf surfaces. In the leaf axils, the blooms are solitary or in tiny clusters. The calyx limb is around 4-5 mm broad and the blooms are greenish yellow. The sepals are long and stretch out in a reflexed pattern. Male flowers grow on different plants than female blooms. The fruits are orange-red berries that are long and ellipsoid in form.
