It's a deciduous tree with a trunk up to 1.5 m in diameter and a height of 15–32 m. Young trees have a strong apical dominance, with a straight trunk and symmetrical conical crown, which gradually becomes rounded to uneven as the tree grows older. On young trees, the bark is smooth purplish-brown with noticeable horizontal grey-brown lenticels, but on older trees, the bark becomes thick, dark blackish-brown, and fissured. The leaves are alternating, simple ovoid-acute, 7–14 cm long and 4–7 cm wide, glabrous matt or sub-shiny green above, variably finely downy underneath, with a serrated edge and an acuminate tip, and a 2–3.5 cm long green or reddish petiole with two to five tiny red glands.
