Torrey pine is a deciduous tree with a deep root structure. The gray-green needles are eight to twelve inches long and come in five-packs (occasionally four or three). Each needle in a five-needle cluster is 1/5th of a circle in cross-section; when they join together at the base, they create a cylinder encased in a papery sheath. Three years pass until the needles turn brown and fall in the autumn of the third year. Strobili are the reproductive structures of pines and other conifers. Male and female strobili can be found on the same tree, however the females are found further out on the branches than the males.
