Picea likiangensis (Purple Liakiang Spruce) is an evergreen coniferous tree with a pyramidal crown and a trunk up to 40 inches in diameter measured at chest height. It grows to mature height of 165 feet tall. The bark is scaly and dark grey in hue. Branchlets are yellow at first, then grey as they mature and become densely pubescent. The leaves extend radially around the branchlet, or are tightly appressed forward on the top sides and spread out on the bottom sides. Individual needles have a flattened-rhombic cross shape and are straight or slightly bent. They have varied apices and are long and wide, with 4 to 6 stomatal lines running down the bottom surfaces. Pollen cones are tall and reddish-brown in hue.
