The mature trees' branchlets have a noticeable downward slant. Twigs have an orangish hue and are generally hairless. With age, the bark becomes grayish-brown with reddish undertones and becomes scaly. The needles are rectangular in cross-section, glossy dark green, 1/2 to 1 inch long, sharply pointed, and spread out on very small stalks called sterigmata from all sides of the twig.
