Mimosa pudica (Sensitive Plant)
Plant of the pea family that responds to touch and other stimuli by quickly shutting and drooping its leaves, then returning to original shape and form within 3-8 minutes. The plant is a spiky subshrub that grows to about 1 foot in height. It features tiny globular pink or mauve flower puffs and complex leaves. Rapid water release from specialised cells found at the bases of leaflets and leaf stalks accounts for the plant's extremely fast reaction to touch.
