A straggling, unarmed shrub that grows 2 to 4 feet tall in the United States but more than twice as tall in its native state; branches are very thin, dangling, and rushlike, grooved, and covered with short, silky hairs when young. Leaves are sparse and inconspicuous, from 14 to 34 inches long and linear. Short, silky racemes, 12 to 112 in. long, with five to fifteen flowers, are scattered along the branches. Flowers are milky white and deliciously fragrant, measuring 12 inches long, with silky hairs on the petals and a black calyx that contrasts with the petals; the keel of the corolla is cuspidate at the apex. Pods are wrinkled, obovoid, mucronate at the apex, and approximately 12 inches long, with one (occasionally two) black-brown seed within.
