Ficus religiosa (Bodhi Tree, Peepal Tree, Pipal, Sacred Fig)

Ficus religiosa (Bodhi Tree, Peepal Tree, Pipal, Sacred Fig) is a large, long-lived tree belonging to the mulberry family (Moraceae). Native primarily to the Indian subcontinent and surrounding regions, it can grow to approximately 100 feet (30 meters) or more under favorable conditions. It develops a tall trunk, broad spreading canopy, gray to gray-brown bark, and an extensive root system. In warm, humid environments, older trees may also produce aerial roots.

The leaves are one of the tree's most distinctive features. They are alternate, broadly ovate to heart-shaped, smooth-edged, and typically bright to medium green, with an unusually long, slender, tapering tip. Small figs develop in the leaf axils, remaining green when immature and generally turning reddish-purple to dark purple or nearly black as they mature. The figs provide an important food source for birds and other wildlife, while the tree's large canopy provides substantial shade and habitat.

Ficus religiosa has exceptional religious and cultural significance in Hinduism, Buddhism, and Jainism. It is particularly sacred in Buddhism because Siddhartha Gautama, the historical Buddha, is traditionally believed to have attained enlightenment beneath a Ficus religiosa at Bodh Gaya, India. The sacred tree there is known as the Bodhi Tree. Peepal trees are also commonly planted near temples and sacred sites, where devotees may offer water, flowers, lamps, and prayers.

Ecologically, the Peepal Tree supports wildlife through its fruits and provides shade and habitat while contributing to soil stabilization. It is primarily propagated naturally through seeds, which are frequently dispersed by birds, although vegetative propagation is also possible. The species can sometimes begin life as an epiphyte in cracks or branches of another tree, eventually sending roots toward the ground.

The Peepal is fundamentally a tropical and subtropical species that prefers warm temperatures, sunlight, and well-drained soil. It is sensitive to frost and freezing temperatures and therefore is not reliably hardy in cold temperate climates. Despite its practical limitations as a landscape tree in such regions, Ficus religiosa remains one of the world's most culturally important trees and is an enduring symbol of spirituality, enlightenment, nature, and religious devotion.
