Ficus carica (Common Fig, Edible Fig) is a deciduous fruiting tree or large shrub belonging to the mulberry family (Moraceae). It has been cultivated for thousands of years and is native to regions around the Mediterranean, the Middle East, and western Asia. It is valued both as an ornamental plant and for its delicious edible fruit.

The Common Fig typically grows as a spreading, multi-trunked tree or large shrub, generally reaching about 10–30 feet tall in cultivation. It develops a broad, irregular crown with smooth gray to silvery-gray bark that becomes more rugged with age. The tree also produces a characteristic milky-white latex sap when its leaves, stems, or immature fruit are damaged.

Its large, distinctive leaves are broadly ovate and usually divided into three to five deep lobes. They have a somewhat rough texture on top and are lighter and often fuzzy underneath. The leaves can reach roughly 8–12 inches across, giving the tree a lush appearance during the growing season before falling in autumn in colder climates.

The fig itself is a specialized structure called a syconium, containing numerous tiny flowers inside what appears to be a single fruit. Depending on the variety, mature figs may be green, yellow-green, brown, purple, or nearly black on the outside, with interiors ranging from amber and pink to deep red or purple. They are commonly eaten fresh or dried and are also used for preserves and other foods.

Ficus carica thrives in full sun, warm conditions, and well-drained soil, and it has good drought tolerance once established. It is generally suited to USDA Zones 6–10, although winter protection may be needed in colder areas. Some varieties have a specialized relationship with fig wasps for pollination, while many cultivated varieties can produce fruit without pollination. With appropriate pruning, the Common Fig can be maintained as a compact garden tree, container specimen, or even trained as a bonsai.
