Country Gentleman White Sweet Corn (Shoe Peg Corn) (Zea mays)
Country Gentleman White Sweet Corn (Zea mays), also known as shoe-peg corn for its distinct kernels, debuted in 1890 by S. D. Woodruff & Sons. A favorite for home gardens, it yields up to three flavorful ears per stalk, each reaching a length of eight inches. Renowned for its prolonged on-stalk quality, it surpasses other sweet corn varieties. Growing on tall stalks, it reaches heights of seven to eight feet and matures in about 90 days (Zea mays). With irregularly arranged white kernels, Country Gentleman stands out as one of the most unique sweet corns. Its alternate name, Shoe-peg, stems from its deep and narrow kernels. A larger version of an older variety from the 1890s in the Connecticut River Valley, it can produce three or more ears per stalk in fertile soils.
