Thuja occidentalis belongs to the cypress family Cupressaceae and is an evergreen coniferous tree. The bark is reddish-brown, wrinkled, and peels in long, narrow strips. Northern white cedar has scaly leaves and fan-like branches. Flat sprays of foliage with long scale-like leaves constitute the foliage.The seed cones are tall and broad, with six to eight overlapping scales, and are slender, yellow-green, maturing to brown. Each one has around eight seeds. If the tree collapses, the branches may take root.
