Senecio Serpens aka Curio repens (Blue Chalksticks, Blue Senecio, Blue Finger Succulent) - Plug Plants a striking evergreen succulent prized for its unusual powdery blue foliage and drought tolerance.

Blue Chalksticks (Senecio serpens) is a striking, easy-care succulent prized for its powdery blue-green foliage and versatile growth habit. Its fleshy, finger-like leaves are lightly tinged with purple and grow on upright stems reaching about 12 inches tall, gradually forming a dense, attractive mat 24–36 inches wide.

More compact and slower growing than its cousin Senecio mandraliscae, Blue Chalksticks maintains a neat, tidy appearance that makes it ideal for both beginners and experienced gardeners. In summer and fall, clusters of delicate white flowers add seasonal interest and contrast beautifully with the cool-toned foliage.

Drought-tolerant and exceptionally low maintenance, Blue Chalksticks thrives in full sun and requires very little water once established. It performs beautifully outdoors in USDA Zones 10–11 and is equally at home in containers, succulent arrangements, houseplant collections, rock gardens, and water-wise landscapes. In frost-prone regions, simply move containers indoors during colder months.

For an eye-catching display of color and texture, pair Blue Chalksticks with Echeveria, Sedum, Aloe, Kalanchoe, or Phlox. Whether you're searching for a unique gift, a standout container specimen, or a vibrant groundcover for a sunny garden, Blue Chalksticks delivers year-round beauty with minimal effort.

Key characteristics include:

  • Growth habit: Spreading, ground-covering succulent
  • Height: Typically 6–12 inches (15–30 cm)
  • Spread: 2–4 feet (60–120 cm) or more over time
  • Leaf color: Powdery blue, blue-gray, or silvery turquoise
  • Leaf shape: Short, finger-like, cylindrical leaves with rounded tips
  • Texture: Smooth, fleshy, and wax-coated
  • Flowers: Small white to creamy-white flowers with a mild cinnamon-like fragrance
  • Bloom period: Usually summer through fall, depending on climate

Native Habitat

Blue Chalksticks is native to the dry coastal regions of the South Africa, where it grows in:

  • Rocky slopes
  • Coastal scrublands
  • Sandy, well-drained soils
  • Areas with mild winters and seasonal drought

Landscape Uses

Because of its vivid blue coloration, it is widely used as:

  • Groundcover in xeriscapes
  • Accent plant in succulent gardens
  • Border plant along pathways
  • Erosion control on slopes
  • Container and patio plant
  • Companion plant for colorful succulents such as Echeveria, Aeonium, and Sedum

The cool blue foliage creates dramatic contrast against plants with green, purple, red, orange, or silver leaves.

Growing Conditions

Factor Preference
Sun Full sun to light shade
Soil Fast-draining sandy or rocky soil
Water Low; drought tolerant once established
Hardiness USDA Zones 9–11
Salt tolerance High

Distinguishing Features

The easiest way to identify Blue Chalksticks is by its:

  • Intense powder-blue coloration
  • Compact finger-like leaves
  • Dense mat-forming growth habit
  • Ability to create a "blue carpet" effect in the landscape

Compared with the closely related Curio mandraliscae, Blue Chalksticks has shorter, thicker leaves and a more compact, ground-hugging form. Its cousin grows taller and has longer pencil-like foliage.

Overall, Blue Chalksticks is considered one of the most visually distinctive blue-leaved succulents available, valued primarily for its foliage color rather than its flowers.
