Purple Vienna Kohlrabi (Brassica oleracea)
Kohlrabi is both attractive and unusual. Leaves and globes are purplish, with a mild turnip-cabbage flavour. White-fleshed bulbs are eaten like broccoli, and leaves are eaten like kale. Plants reach a height of 18" and have globes that rise above the soil. Plant in the early spring for a summer harvest, and then again in the late summer for a fall and winter harvest. When the bulbs are the size of tennis balls, harvest them. Before slicing and cooking, peel and remove all tough and woody parts.
