SALVIA farinacea (Blue Sage) is a herbaceous perennial plant native to the southwestern United States and northern Mexico. It is a member of the mint family (Lamiaceae) and is treasured for its beautiful spikes of blue flowers and aromatic foliage. It is a popular choice for adding color, texture, and fragrance to gardens and landscapes.

Blue Sage typically grows to a height of 1 to 3 feet (30 to 90 cm) and has a spread of about 1 to 2 feet (30 to 60 cm). It thrives in full sun and well-drained soil.  It has square stems and gray-green leaves with a slightly rough texture. The leaves are lance-shaped and can be covered in a mealy or powdery substance, hence the name "Mealy Sage."

The flowers of Salvia farinacea are the main attraction. They are arranged in dense, upright spikes and come in various shades of blue, including deep blue, lavender-blue, and sky blue. The tubular flowers have a two-lipped structure and are highly attractive to pollinators, such as bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds.

Blue Sage typically blooms from late spring to fall, providing a long-lasting display of vibrant blue flowers. Deadheading spent flowers can encourage continuous blooming and prolong the flowering period.

Blue Sage is a versatile plant that adds a splash of color and fragrance to gardens and landscapes. It works well as a border plant, mass planting, or mixed with other perennials and annuals. Its upright form and vibrant blue flowers make it an excellent choice for attracting pollinators and creating a focal point in the garden.

Blue Sage, with its stunning blue flowers, aromatic foliage, and pollinator-friendly nature, is a cherished addition to gardens and landscapes. Its ability to tolerate heat and drought, along with its vibrant color display, makes it a valuable plant for adding beauty and attracting wildlife to the garden.
