POTENTILLA thurberi (Scarlet Cinquefoil) is a herbaceous perennial plant known for its vibrant scarlet flowers and attractive foliage. This species is native to western North America and is commonly found in rocky slopes, open woodlands, and meadows.

Scarlet Cinquefoil is a clump-forming perennial that typically grows to a height of 1 to 2 feet (30 to 60 cm) with a similar spread. It has palmate leaves composed of five leaflets that are typically green or gray-green in color. The foliage has a slightly fuzzy texture. It prefers well-drained soil and can tolerate a range of light conditions, from full sun to partial shade.

The flowers of Potentilla thurberi are the highlight of this plant. They are small, typically around 1 inch (2.5 cm) in diameter, and have five petals. The flowers are a brilliant scarlet or deep red color, often with a yellow center. They are borne in clusters atop slender stems.  Scarlet Cinquefoil typically blooms from late spring to early summer, with the flowering period lasting for several weeks. Deadheading spent flowers can encourage additional blooming and maintain a tidy appearance.

Scarlet Cinquefoil is often used in perennial borders, rock gardens, or native plant gardens to provide a burst of vibrant color. It can also be incorporated into naturalistic landscapes or used as a cut flower in floral arrangements. Potentilla thurberi, or Scarlet Cinquefoil, with its vivid scarlet flowers, brings a bold and lively element to garden landscapes.
