Bayberry is a thick deciduous shrub found in eastern North America. These are dioecious shrubs with male and female blooms on some of the plants. Female plants yield greying berries that may be used to manufacture waxy, fragrant candles and soaps if a male plant is available for pollination. Even when few leaves adhere to the shrub, the growth habit is rounded, and the branches fill in densely, giving some protection for wild birds.
