Zone 6+

Physical Characteristics : A deciduous Tree growing to 6 m (19ft) by 6 m (19ft) at a medium rate. It is hardy to zone 6 and is not frost tender. It is in flower from May to June, and the seeds ripen in November. The flowers are hermaphrodite (have both male and female organs) and are pollinated by Bees. The plant is self-fertile. The plant prefers light (sandy), medium (loamy) and heavy (clay) soils and requires well-drained soil. The plant prefers acid, neutral and basic (alkaline) soils..It can grow in semi-shade (light woodland) or no shade. It requires moist soil. The plant can tolerates strong winds but not maritime exposure.

A flowering, fruit-producing tree, member of the rose family; flowers resemble those of hawthorn, white or light pink; 1 1/2"; 1" fruits, hard and brownish, inedible until aged or frosted, used in jellies; old trees may be thorny; of rounded habit; native to southeast Europe, Iran

The trees are self-fertilizing and long-lived (they can be hundreds of years old).  I'd describe them as tasting like really good apple butter. People will describe them as holding delicate notes of cinnamon, vanilla, cider, wine, etc. I don't know about that--I just tasted really, really good apple butter, delivered to me in a convenient skin instead of on toast. The flesh even looks like apple butter. Of course, like all persnickety fruits, they have a few big seeds that you have to work around as well
