Acorus calamus - Sweet Flag - Seeds

Acorus calamus, commonly known as Sweet Flag or Calamus (Sanskrit: हैमवती Haimavati, वचा Vacha, Bhutanashini, Jatil; Hindi: Bajai, Gora-bach, Vasa Bach; Marathi: Vekhand; Tamil: Vashambu;Telugu: Vadaja, వస Vasa; Kannada: ಬಜೆ; Malayalam: വയമ്പ്‌ Vayambu) and erroneously as "rush" or "sedges", is a plant from the Acoraceae family, in the genus Acorus. It is a tall perennialwetlandmonocot with scented leaves and more strongly scented rhizomes. Parts of the plant have been used medicinally and its scent has been used to make fragrances.

A grasslike, aromatic perennial with long, narrow, erect leaves rising to a height of 5 feet. This plant emerges from the water with a 2-edged stalk, with an outward-jutting club-like spadix bearing tiny, greenish-yellow flower. The root stocks of this aromatic plant are used as a natural insecticide and an ingredient of perfumes! The rootstocks were once used as a food additive as well, but this practice has since been banned by FDA. Habitats include sedge meadows that are prone to flooding, edges of small lakes and ponds, marshes, swamps, seeps and springs, and wetland restorations.
